Saving The World

Presenting another spin-off series from their Doctor Who audio dramas, Big Finish Productions elected to release a range of soundtrack music CDs, showcasing each of their regular composers in turn. Alistair Lock was the subject of volume one, with selections of individual cues - many of which included unused material - from the stories of all three audio Doctors. Each story was introduced by it's original trailer (with the exception of The Fearmonger, where the revised version produced after release was used), and the artwork from each CD was used to create a black and white montage within the interior packaging. This would be replaced with a repeated image of the front cover in future releases.

Rush-released to break up the Paul McGann-dominated schedule, Alistair Lock's second soundtrack compilation surprised many by including music from Last of the Titans, a special one-part story released on the cover of DWM in January 2001. As such, the disc included no original trailers (as Titans had never been trailed and was no longer available), and extended material - approximately 30 minutes each - from the other two scores. Benny's Theme was a specially recorded piece, combining themes subtly featured throughout the story with the upbeat dance material that had been used to back the story's original trailer.

Lavishly illustrated with elements from the cover art of each adventure, the fourth music release from Big Finish - running to 120 minutes - used the design template for the 'new-look' audio adventures (introduced with Storm Warning), including background images and predominately black inlay booklets. The double-sheet inlay included full-page introductions to the scores by their composers, with small black and white photographs of Alistair Lock, Nicholas Briggs, Russell Stone and William Allen. Once again, the original trailers were included before the relevant scores. The first disc included several unused cues from Storm Warning within the suite.

Much anticipated, primarily for the full-length Arnold theme, this double-disc release was originally sheduled for December 2001, then early January 2002, then later in the same month, where it was finally released alongside Invaders From Mars, the first in a new series of McGann audio adventures. As both an excuse and an apology, Big Finish secured 1,500 copies autographed by Paul McGann, which were sent first to mail-order purchasers and then specialist shops around the UK: a practise that stuck for the next 3 music releases, with the first 1,500 copies of Music from the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors signed by Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy respectively. The preview cover displayed at the Big Finish website from mid-2001 did not feature the Paul McGann credit and misplaced the Big Finish logo. The 'photograph' of the Doctor and Charley was originally prepared for Doctor Who Magazine.
