The music specially composed for Doctor Who was often as avant-garde and cutting-edge as it was melodic: what better way to underscore a futuristic landscape than to use the instruments of the future - tape loops and synthesisers? Surprisingly, given that much of the programme's soundtrack music was at the front line of sound research (with freelance composers like Tristram Cary and the musicians of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop experimenting with the latest synthesisers and new techniques of recording and sampling), only three LPs and a handful of single tracks were commercially released during the show's lifetime. As appreciation of the art of the early episodes grew during the 1990s, and as the immense archives of the BBC and the Radiophonic Workshop were catelogued and updated, many unheard gems were collected and released - and you can find everything you ever needed to know about each and every soundtrack release right here.Soundtrack albums
