The Leisure Hive

The Doctor and Romana decide to forego Brighton beach and take a much-needed holiday on the pleasure planet of Argolis. Ravaged decades ago by interstellar war between the Argolin and the Foamasi, Argolis now hosts the Leisure Hive - an idea retreat for tourists from all over the cosmos. But a series of 'accidents' leads the Doctor and Romana to discover that the hive holds dark secrets...

DVD Bonus features

A New Beginning (25'48")
A look at the dawn of the John Nathan-Turner produced episodes of Doctor Who, with contributions from June Hudson, Lovett Bickford, Christopher H Bidmead, JN-T (footage shot for the BBV 'The Doctors' documentary), John Leeson, Val McCrimmon, Tom Baker, Sid Sutton and Peter Howell.
  • Hudson on JN-T's youth, Bickford on his showmanship and Bidmead on his knowledge.
  • Nathan-Turner on the "it'll do" mentality.
  • Bidmead talks about meeting Barry Letts and JN-T for the first time and telling them Doctor Who was silly, Leeson about the valid criticisms of the show,  JN-T on the slapstick elements and McCrimmon on the silliness.
  • JN-T and Bidmead discuss the return to the show's roots and Letts' involvement.
  • Bidmead and JN-T cover the real science in the show and removing "magical objects" such as K.9. Leeson joins them to go further into the reasons.
  • Tom Baker explains why K.9 had been successful, and why he hated it, along with further contributions from Leeson, Bickford and Bidmead.
  • Discussion turns to Tom, with all the contributors looking at how he'd taken over the show.
  • Howell, Sutton and JN-T on the reasons for changing the title sequence and the inspirations behind the new visuals and music, with clips from The Music Arcade putting it into perspective.
  • JN-T then explains why he didn't ask Dudley Simpson to return and Howell his aims with the new incidental music. Bickford and Howell specifically discuss The Leisure Hive.
  • Hudson offers her opinions of Bickford, and Bickford returns her compliments. She also speaks of her excitement at designing the new costume for the Doctor.
  • Bickford and JN-T discuss the former's directing style and overall look he brought to the four episodes.
  • Bidmead talks about Quantel and Bickford about whether or not they overspent on it.

Restoration Notes

The D3 copies of the original quads created in the mid-90s were used as the basis of this release: After being run through the transform PAL decoder, dropouts were cleaned up with Scratchbox and the credit sequences recreated. Mark Ayres, as usual, provided an audio restoration. At the last minute, the original film reels of the opening sequence appeared on eBay and the Restoration Team won the auction, allowing them to replace the first few minutes with footage of substantially better quality.
