Writer's Question Time (12'09")
Clips of an interview session with Marc Platt from PanoptiCon 1990. Platt answers questions on the start of his writing career and how it finally led him to Ghost Light, his working relationship with Andrew Cartmel, the original plot of Ghost Light (which sounds more like his eventual New Adventures novel Lungbarrow), the reasons for the Ace-centric season 26, alterations in the plot between script and screen (he plugs the novelisation), who Control is, Lewis Carroll and William Blake influences throughout the episodes, whether Light is an angel or not and his fascination with the mythos of Gallifrey.

Light in Dark Places: Illuminating Ghost Light (38'50")
A documentary looking back at the making of this story.
  • Andrew Cartmel, Sophie Aldred, Katharine Schlesinger, Michael Cochrane, Ian Hogg and Mark Ayres tell us their initial reactions and expectations.
  • Cartmel on his relationship with the producer.
  • Aldred on realising the script would go over time and Cartmel on first hearing from Marc Platt and their work on Lungbarrow.
  • Cochrane discusses his love for the script and why, while Cartmel defends the obscurity. McCoy admits some parts are incomprehensible. Ayres shares his thoughts on the basic ideas. Hogg believes it all makes sense but Sharon Duce admits they just had fun with it. Aldred covers the characters' journeys, believing they contributed to the confusion.
  • Ayres, Aldred and McCoy cover their amazement of the calibre of guest artiste. Cochrane and Hogg discuss the close relationship they all had Schlesinger on how and why she was cast.
  • Aldred turns the conversation to rehearsals: Schlesinger, McCoy, Duce and Cochrane talk about the fun they had - perhaps too much fun. Hogg talks about revolving the performance around Aldred and McCoy.
  • McCoy and Aldred talk about the confusion of Survival and Ghost Light being made back-to-back and Alan Wareing's challenges. Duce sympathises.
  • Aldred and McCoy consider the pros and cons of location vs studio recording. Cartmel and Aldred explain that the BBC did period pieces best - Cochrane and Hogg speak of their amazement at the quality of the Ghost Light sets.
  • Hogg, Cochrane, McCoy and Duce on the 10pm cutoff and what they were able to achieve in the limited time.
  • Discussion turns to Frank Windsor and his character, with thoughts from McCoy - mainly on his eating habits.
  • Aldred talks about working with Cochrane, Schlesinger about getting the chance to sing, Aldred and McCoy about working with insects - Duce assures us the one she ate was false..
  • McCoy on props and Ghost Light being one of his favourites... and why. Then McCoy, Cartmel and Aldred explain the slow darkening of the character of the Doctor and the increasing complexity of Ace.
  • Aldred and McCoy on the lack of time in rehearsals and filming, and they, along with Hogg, Ayres and Cartmel discuss editing on the fly.
  • Ayres offers his thoughts on the music and the sound mix, admitting that the music had been mixed too loud.
  • Cartmel considers the difficulties for the audience when the companion is too clever and Aldred tells us that the script made it much more clear. Cartmel gives us a basic "words of one syllable" explanation of the plot. Schlesinger tells us what little she was told about the background.
  • Aldred and McCoy regret not knowing this was the final story they would film.

Restoration Notes

A Philips VS4 was used to attempt to clear up some of the worst noise from this poor condition master (caused by a combination of the lighting conditions and the ancient cameras used in the original recording), and new opening and closing titles were created.
